Welding moulds for monopiles

January 2020 - De Boer Snijbedrijf specialises in cutting steel and RVS in any required form, and supplies autogenous, plasma and laser cut components in thicknesses varying from 0.5 mm to 750 mm. De Boer Snijbedrijf also supplies certificated cut steel that has been checked and assessed by Lloyds Register LR, Stoomwezen, Veritas, ABS or DNV.

Steel with 3.1 certificate

Machinefabriek Bex from Wessem asked De Boer Snijbedrijf to cut two welding moulds to size from sheet steel S355J2+N with a 3.1 certificate and a thickness of 30 mm. These welding moulds have a cross-section of 6 metres, they weigh about 20 tonnes each and they are used to mount knees on monopiles, the piles supporting wind turbines.

Monopile

Monopiles consist of a single cylindrical steel tube, hence the name. The advantage of this design is that fabrication and installation are relatively simple. The pile is manufactured in parts, welded together and transported as a whole to the desired location. 

Monopiles are used for offshore wind turbines. An installation vessel transports the piles to their destination. Once on location, the pile is lifted by a crane and positioned in a special jig so that it can be driven as vertically as possible into the seabed. When the pile has reached the desired depth, another section is placed on top of the pile to support the wind turbine.
