January 2020 - After years of discussion, the construction of Super Hoogvliet in the Lombok district of Arnhem finally began in January 2019. The building on the site of a former garage has a long history. The first plan in 2012 for an underground supermarket met with a lot of local opposition.
The supermarket owner and the project developer then talked to the residents and local entrepreneurs in order to come up with a new plan. It consisted of the preservation of the monumental villa, a three-storey house with space for shops and, in the villa garden, a full-service supermarket at ground level and an underground car park. There was local support for this plan.
Customised approach for the steel structure
The steel structure for the new supermarket and underground car park was delivered and assembled by Wopereis Staalbouw from Doetinchem. Wopereis also installed the hollow-core slab floor. Approximately 14 tonnes of straight construction profiles were hot-dip galvanised by Rotocoat.
New asset for the area
The construction of the supermarket with a floor space of approximately 1800 m2 and the car park measuring approximately 2500 m2 has now been completed. The façade and roof of the supermarket have been decorated with green vegetation, not only making the building sustainable but also ensuring that it fits in well with the surroundings.
Supermarket Hoogvliet and brasserie Villa Curnonsky, which is housed in the historic villa alongside, were opened during a festive ceremony on Thursday, 28 November.
