Circus in the theatre

August 2020 - The system for lifting sets in the stage tower of the AFAS Circus Theatre in Scheveningen hasn't kept up with the large-scale productions in modern times. So this stage tower needed rebuilding.

Theatre tower outdated

With this renovation, Stage Entertainment wants to continue to protect the safety of employees and visitors, even with large productions in the future.

A meticulous job

The first preparatory structural changes were made in the summer of 2019. Stieva Metaal Groep strengthened and adapted the steel structure of the stage tower, and fitted mounting brackets for the new structure.

Stieva Metaal Groep also completed the second phase of the renovation of the stage tower in 2020. The challenge was the height of the building. 102 tonnes of steel beams and 20 tonnes of grating floors had to be lifted a height of 35 metres. That's a meticulous job and safety comes first. It was completed smoothly and the new beam structure fits precisely on the old building.

Theatre tower seven metres higher

The stage tower is now about 7 metres higher than the previous tower. This is important to lift sets, spotlights and backdrops so high that they are no longer in sight. The lifting systems used for this are located in the tower, together with a range of technical systems. There are also walkways in the tower, providing the technical staff with easy access to the equipment.

Durable Staco type RH heavy duty gratings

After the new structure had been put into place, the stairwell and the grating floors were installed. The final part of the operation consists of positioning the façade sheeting of aluminium and wood. The work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.

For this project, Staco supplied 20 tonnes of RH type heavy duty gratings that are ideal for heavy loads. The gratings galvanised by Rotocoat were supplied in sections measuring approximately 1820 x 1205 mm.

The gratings are therefore permanently protected against the weather conditions so close to the sea. The AFAS Circus Theatre can again look ahead for many years, and many beautiful musical productions on stage.
